And did you find your own repetitive behaviors?
Some of those are related to taste, some because it is easy, some we don't know bud it is a habit.
There will be also some who are related to stress. All the reasons we have to do these things are the same reasons that somebody with autism has.
If i may take an example. Let see, nail biting we can do this as a habit but if we get more stressed we will more bite. If we smoke, we will smoke more when there is more stress. The reason why we are doing this is that we can not handle the situation at that time and we are trying to get a feeling of comfort. When we are really stressed out we do not longer receive all the information that is surrounding us sometimes even we can block out all the info and just focus on what we want. It is a way of self protect. So if we want to reduce this behavior we must take away the stress.
The whole world could be the stress factor for people with autism. They must comfort them selfs because they can not handle all the stimuli that is coming in to their brain. So they will take care of themselves and block out all the stress and stay in a safe control mode. If we want to make contact with people who are often in a safe mode we must take care of the surroundings and take away all these stress factors.
Then we have create a space where in the people with autism may choose to let you in to his/her world and start to open up to make contact because there is no stress and they can control this situation.

Autism with a smile
Who is eating every morning the same breakfast, eating his/her nails, smoking a cigarette, drinking the same amount of coffee, walking the same route to the shop, drinking the same wine every day, doing things in the same order, scratching behind the ears ore in his beard, tapping with the toes on the floor, rocking back and forward with a leg.......... etc.
We are also repetitive some how, try to find out why you are doing these things ore have this kind of behavior. If you start to understand why you are doing these things, you may start to understand why a child with autism is doing his or her repetitive things.
