They may have to chose to be in their safe mode because of all the stimuli that is around. Because of this stimuli they can not handle the contact with others. It is also possible that you are the drop in the bucket that is to much. So as i told already in a earlier blog we must take away the stress factors and start allover again. If we want to make contact we have to be sure that noting els can stress them. If this is in order we make sure that we are have the right attitude to make contact. We will not force this contact by pushing them ore constantly telling "hey I want to talk to you". No we will wait until the person that is with us in the room will contact us! This could be a blink of an eye or a touch or......... At this point they have made contact and we are so happy about it that we will celebrate this as if it is the most beatyfull thing in the whole world. And what if they do not choose to make contact????? We will join them in wath ever they are doing. We will join with the same atention and rithme as they are doing. This joining of each other is to create a total feeling of comfort. Let me give you an example, If you are relexing and reading a book on the sofa and i come in and sit next to you and wand something from you........ I askt but you say no I want ot read so I start to push you because I realy want something from you ....... Thise will give you a feeling of..............? There is absolutly no comfort in the situation what so ever. But if I come in and just sit next to you on the sofa and start also to read a book and wait until you take the turn to speak to me... then i have the "green light" to ask you what ever I want to ask you without being a pain in the ....! ore just interrupting your relax moment.

Autism with a smile

And did you find your own repetitive behaviors?
Some of those are related to taste, some because it is easy, some we don't know bud it is a habit.
There will be also some who are related to stress. All the reasons we have to do these things are the same reasons that somebody with autism has.
If i may take an example. Let see, nail biting we can do this as a habit but if we get more stressed we will more bite. If we smoke, we will smoke more when there is more stress. The reason why we are doing this is that we can not handle the situation at that time and we are trying to get a feeling of comfort. When we are really stressed out we do not longer receive all the information that is surrounding us sometimes even we can block out all the info and just focus on what we want. It is a way of self protect. So if we want to reduce this behavior we must take away the stress.
The whole world could be the stress factor for people with autism. They must comfort them selfs because they can not handle all the stimuli that is coming in to their brain. So they will take care of themselves and block out all the stress and stay in a safe control mode. If we want to make contact with people who are often in a safe mode we must take care of the surroundings and take away all these stress factors.
Then we have create a space where in the people with autism may choose to let you in to his/her world and start to open up to make contact because there is no stress and they can control this situation.

Autism with a smile

Who is eating every morning the same breakfast, eating his/her nails, smoking a cigarette, drinking the same amount of coffee, walking the same route to the shop, drinking the same wine every day, doing things in the same order, scratching behind the ears ore in his beard, tapping with the toes on the floor, rocking back and forward with a leg.......... etc.
We are also repetitive some how, try to find out why you are doing these things ore have this kind of behavior. This could be a playroom or bedroom for example. In this room the child could do what ever he/she wants and you will be there to join them with out any judgment. It is a blessing to get a look or word and this will be a reason to celebrate this small or big step of trying to make contact with you! Let the child know that you are happy really happy with the step forward they make. Play it big so they will be interested in you! Have fun and enjoy playing.

Autism with a smile

There are some voices that start to tell that 10% of the people with autism has a chance to recover.
This is great news!! But the biggest is this one. Why is there a belief in this world that autism is not reversible? Ore let me say, a belief of if you have autism you have a life long problem and there is nothing we can do about it.
Where is the proof of this belief?????? It is not based on a scientific research they just belief that there is no cure because the did not found it yet. What they do tell you however is that there is no proof of healing ore recovering from autism. But is that the truth? Ore is it more like....... 45 years ago telling someone that it is not possible to walk on the moon? Most of the people would have agree on that one. But where they right????We all know that it is possible to walk on the moon now, we wouldn't even be surprised if the late news was telling us that tomorrow at nine o'clock the Discovery will start on a trip to mars with seven astronauts and a dog! Sometimes it take a while before the world can and will accept that there is change possible. And if they start to belief that there is a way of really helping the people with autism it take still a long time to get the whole system in to the right/new direction. Do we have to wait until this is happening? May we think for our selfs and do that what we think is right? I strongly belief that there is no limit on what we can do to help people with autism to recover. If we start to belief this we CAN make the difference. Why belief that there is no hope???? Why belief that we have to suffer our whole life? Why belief that it is God's way of telling us that we are bad? Why why why!!!! We may start to think that this person with autism is a gift! a wonderful opportunity to learn more about life, to show God that we are capable to love and help. We can show the world that there is hope and we can enjoy the blessings of every step forward the person with autism is making. Why wait until the science is ready to accept that autism is not a disease for life if you can start right now to help a child with autism!

Autisme with a smile

Is autism the reason why we contact the Autism Treatment Center of America? I have to say yes. I'm glad that we had the chance to get in contact with this institute. Now we not only use the lessons we've learn to help autistic people but also to give typical children the most valuable life lessons there is! To be accepted and to accept. To be non judgmental and loving! To find peace and self respect with out being affright of what other people may think.
Even if you do not have a child with special needs i would suggest that you some how get in contact with the Option Institute (this is the "mother" of the Autism Treatment Center of America™) and find out that they teach very important life lessons that will help you to climb every mountain that is on the path of growing older. This includes: relations personal and at work, between parents and children, hubby and wife etc. to be happy, to deal with fear, to make your self the most interesting person in the world....... this is so wide that i can't tell it all but if you have the change to contact them don't wait pic up the phone ore write a email. First it is the most loving and your child helping program there is. Secondly the road map to find the way in helping your child is so clear and understandable that we never ever thought that we where not capable to be the child's guide. In the third place, this whole program has a positive impact upon the lives of our self as well on the lives of the team that is playing with our child we all start to look around in the world with out judgments. Making friends was never a problem but now we really love those because of the lack of judgments. Our friends are comfortable in our home's we can talk about everything being strait forward and herding nobody.
Another great point is the support of the Autism Treatment Center of America™ they never let you down with a question. In the beginning after his birth Tybalt was a "normal" kid but suddenly he start to chance and start to live in his own world, we couldn't say that he was not aware of us but he was hiding under the sofa and won't connect with anybody. Maybe he was hiding because of us........
After we start the Son-Rise® program Tybalt start to chance. it still amaze me that we think that Tybalt was changing (lol) i more and more belief that first of all we has changed. We had a different approach towards Tybalt. We did not judge him any more we start to accept his repetitive behavior and start to join it. This was so amazing to realize that all we had to do to reconnect with our son we had to join HIM instate of asking him to join us. You know what happened????? But that is not true. In the beginning we had to deal with our own beliefs, struggle with accepting and finding a way to let this miracle of recovering really come true. All the people that where around us then, are still there and to be honest we've a whole lot more friends and loving people around us then we ever had. There is really a lot to be grateful for and one of the biggest things!!!!..... are the lessons that the loving people at the Autism Treatment Center of America™ give to us. We have learned that if we do not belief in the possibilities of recovering from autism it is most likely that we put no or less energy into a child that "never can chance". They where super enthusiastic, amazed that instead of what they did belief, autism is not for life. Of coarse was in every conversation a deep hidden skepticism...... But for us was at that time those people the most chewable (we thought)
We started our Son-Rise® program and start to chance our way of life. Because of the chance in beliefs about autism we became super acceptable, loving, joining and celebrating people. This way of living was so shocking that we lost some of those super enthusiastic people and those who want to "stay" got the strong feeling that they had to interfere some how. We had to tell (after we tried to speak with them about the Son-Rise®program) that they (thinking, do not be judgmental but loving, accepting, understanding) are welcome if they stop to undermine our perfect "autism heeling" environment that we build for our son Tybalt.
To deal whit people who has the strong belief that they now " what is the best" is not easy. It did take a lot of our energy and liquid (tears)........

Autism with a smile

Most of the time we had to deal with two types of people. We did not listen to the medical advice. If we had listen our son was now living in a institute with now hope of recovering. We how ever start the son-rise program and it was the write choice for us and our child! He is recovering and we belief that he will soon be able to start learning at a normal school.
Was it easy to make this choice? Yes and no. Most of the people who surrounding us where telling us that it was not write to putt that amount of energy in one child. We tried to find out how this "miracle" could be happening to those who lost their diagnose of autism. Quickly we find out that the Autism Treatment Center of America™ has a home based program that is called the Son-Rise® program. This program is the beginning of the wonderfull journey we make with Tybalt. From a child that was not speaking, hidding under the sofa and not willing to make anny contact or what so ever, he became the most loving, well speaking, hidding under the sofa for a hide and seek game and enjoying any contact he can make with friends and new people. We are still running our Son-Rise® program and Tybalt is still ingresing his social and cognitive skills. We can run this program because we made the choice to help our child. To make this choice we had to look into our selfs, are we up to doing this??? Can we do this??? are we classified to do this??? There where a lot of questions coming into our life's we never taught that they would come. But the loving people of the Autism Treatment Center of America™ new all the struggle that we had. Truout some Dialoges we new that no one else but the parends is more capeble of helping/guiding their child passing the bridge between his safe/lone world and the for him so difficult "social world".
If we did not beliefd in the possibilities and never act..................

Autism with a smile

My answer would be yes.
